How big is it?
Peru has a territory of 1’285,215 square kilometers.
Geographical Situation:
It is located in the west central part of South America. It borders on Ecuador and Colombia to the north, Brasil and Bolivia to the east, Chile to the south and the Pacific Ocean to the west.
Regions:
Peru has 3 well defined regions: Coast, Sierra (the highlands) and the Amazon Rainforest (Oriente).
Population:
24.5 million inhabitants made up of different ethnic groups: Indoamericans, Africans, Asians and Europeans.
Capital:
Lima with an approximate population of 7.5 million.
Language & Religion:
Spanish is the predominant and official language. Quechua, the ancient language of the Incas, was also declared and official language. Aymara is also spoken on the Titicaca Lake area and several other dialects are spoken on the jungle area. The main religion is Catholicism (95% of the population).
